Understand how enchanting fails, what each failure costs, and how to protect valuable equipment before committing materials.

✦
The rule that prevents regret
Assume every unprotected high-level attempt can be the last
Enchant failure is not one result. Depending on the additive you use, a failed attempt can do nothing, reduce enchantment, remove a sphere or setting, or destroy the equipment. The material tooltip and final system-result line matter as much as the displayed success chance.
Never test on irreplaceable gear
Prepare a replacement, remove valuable spheres if the system permits it, repair the item, and confirm exactly which failure results your additive blocks before pressing the final button.
Enchanting
Higher enchantment becomes sharply less reliable
The chance to succeed falls as the enchant level climbs, and the highest steps fail far more often than they succeed. An additive can change which outcomes are possible, add a bonus, or raise the maximum level you can reach. Read what the upgrade panel shows before you commit materials.
When an attempt fails
Seven possible results
A failed attempt ends in one of the results below. An additive can block some of them before you attempt the enchant.
Failure result
What it means
No penalty
The attempt fails and nothing else happens.
Downgrade by one
Enchant level falls by one.
Downgrade by two
Enchant level falls by two.
Setting lost
An empty sphere setting is destroyed.
Sphere lost
A socketed sphere is destroyed.
Setting and sphere lost
The setting and its sphere are destroyed.
Item destroyed
The equipment itself is destroyed.
Additives change what can happen
Additives differ in which failure results they allow. Some leave only destruction possible, and others allow every result. Several also add a bonus or set a maximum enchant level. Read the additive's tooltip before you use it.
Recognizable named additives include Visregnum's Superior Adamantium, Tornair's Adamantium, Superior Steel of Resurrected Regnus, Bai's Flawless Adamantium, and event variants.
Read the last result line
Some enchant attempts show a generic success message first, then a separate message with the actual failure penalty. If the messages conflict, trust the specific one describing downgrade, setting loss, sphere loss, or destruction.
Do not close the panel until you have inspected the equipment and confirmed its current enchant level and sockets.

Engraving gets less reliable as item level rises.
Confirm the equipment branch before buying a refined sigil.
Check whether the item is sealed or otherwise action-blocked.
Leave a few inventory slots open.
Inspect the finished stat instead of assuming every eligible sigil gives the same effect.
Sealing and release
A sealed item blocks normal item actions
Sealing an item uses the Sealing Crest of Imago. The number you need depends on the item's grade and level.
Before you seal
Check the item in game to see its exact seal count before you commit.
Irreversible dismantling
Decomposition trades the item for material results
Item grade and equipment branch choose the result group and its minimum and maximum output. Benign Metil increases the minimum, Corrosive Metil increases the maximum, and Toxic Metil guarantees the maximum.
Remove the item from every equipment slot
Confirm the icon, name, level, grade, and enchantment.
Check bind, seal, and socket state
Do not dismantle an item while assuming you can recover its sphere afterward.
Review the projected result
Grade and branch affect the result group. Decide whether a Metil modifier is worth using.
Confirm only when the item is expendable
Decomposition is permanent. You cannot get the item back.
Safe upgrade order
Repair, identify, compare replacement, remove recoverable value, select the exact material, review failure coverage, confirm the displayed chance, perform one attempt, then inspect the final item state before doing anything else.
